This guide explains how to pack a chandelier for moving and how we handle every stage of moving a chandelier, from the initial assessment through to packing, transport and reinstallation at your new home.

How we move chandeliers

As an expert removals company, Abels regularly helps customers who need to move a chandelier as part of home removals. Moving a chandelier is often a daunting challenge, given the price, fragility and size of these elegant pieces, and every chandelier requires specialised skills. Challenges like this are a day’s work for Abels’ teams, who can arrange everything from how to transport a chandelier locally to shipping a chandelier around the world.

Pre-move assessment

Before moving day, we recommend a pre-move site visit so our team can assess the chandelier’s size, weight and complexity, and inspect how it is fixed, including the condition of the ceiling rose and the surrounding ceiling structure. Some heavier fixtures involve building work to support them, so it helps to know early. We also check that doorways, staircases and access routes at both properties can take the piece, so narrow doorways and tight spaces are planned for and we can map the safest route in advance, with property protection such as floor coverings in place along it.

Training

All our Abels team members undergo practical training in chandelier transport and handling by moving a medium-sized piece, specially purchased for this purpose by Abels. This lets our staff perfect their technique before they ever encounter a customer’s chandelier. On chandelier moves, a Senior Driver is always deployed, with many years of experience, backed by the specialised equipment and area safety precautions used on every job.

Packing a Chandelier: Step by Step

With so many moving parts, learning how to pack a chandelier for moving is an essential step. As general good practice for a fragile, multi-part fitting like this, the arms should be completely covered to prevent scratches or breaks, and each crystal wrapped separately in tissue paper or bubble wrap. More tissue paper around the most fragile items, plus padded blankets and other protective coverings, adds extra protection. Taking the chandelier apart if necessary, and securing every piece with soft, small packing, prevents movement during the move and reduces the risk of breaks.

Safe removal from the ceiling

Before a chandelier is removed, power to the fixture should be switched off at the circuit breaker, and a qualified electrician should carefully disconnect the electrical wiring. Using electrical specialists matters because electrical accidents are a real risk when wiring is handled incorrectly. Any dangling or loose parts are secured with twist ties or zip ties, and a reinforced mounting bracket may be fitted first if the original light fitting needs extra support. The components are carefully removed, crystals first and then the chains, with wiring positions and connections photographed and detailed photos taken throughout, to ensure proper reassembly and so the fitting can hang safely and be carefully rewired at the new location.

Packing small, medium and larger chandeliers

Every chandelier is first removed from its fixing restraint and electrical connections, so reinstallation at your new home is easy and hassle-free. This matters because movement during the move could cause irreparable damage to a prized possession. How it’s packed from there depends on its size, and how the disassembly process is carried out depends on the chandelier’s materials and how it was originally hung.

A small or medium chandelier is packed as a single piece. It’s placed in a custom-built wooden crate and fixed to the cross baton, then the case is back-filled with polystyrene balls or chippings, with the lid secured so nothing can touch the chandelier during the journey, whether around the corner or across the world. For particularly valuable fixtures, we can also recommend custom crating solutions built around the specific piece.

Larger or heavier chandeliers often need to be fully disassembled at your starting location, as they won’t fit safely through doorways in one piece. Where a chandelier is especially large or heavy, a temporary hoist system and a horizontal bar may be used to safely support it, so our removal crews can safely reach every part without extra risk. Our crews label, number and photograph each part removed, with chains, beads and droplets wrapped in acid-free tissue, arms tissue-wrapped and electrical wiring taped to prevent exposure, before everything is packed in a custom moving crate, often with polystyrene chippings for added protection.

The table below summarises the difference at a glance.

Delivery and reconnection at your new location

At delivery, the polystyrene balls or chippings around a small or medium-sized chandelier are removed first to avoid any damage. Larger chandeliers are unwrapped and rebuilt, then re-hung and connected by our trained electrician, ensuring minimal disruption to your day. Reinstalling the electric connection incorrectly can seriously damage your home and your chandelier, so the fitting is tested afterwards to make sure it’s functioning correctly.

Chandelier cleaning service

Many Abels customers ask for chandelier cleaning and restoration at the time of moving, while the chandelier is down and accessible. It can be a highly specialised process depending on the chandelier’s materials. We take the chandelier apart to clean it, avoiding solvents that could cause damage or leave a film that attracts dust. This can be carried out at your home or in our workshops.

Chandelier storage with Abels

If your new home isn’t quite ready, Abels also offers purpose-built storage facilities for chandeliers, with 24-hour Red Care monitoring and modern alarm systems. Chandeliers remain in the cases they were packed in, marked with your name, reference number and destination, so your piece can be tracked and retrieved easily whenever you’re ready for it.

Frequently Asked Questions About Moving a Chandelier

Can I move a chandelier myself?

A chandelier is a fragile, multi-part fitting with live electrical connections, so it is not a job to rush. Power should be switched off at the circuit breaker and a qualified electrician should disconnect the wiring. For anything large, heavy, antique or valuable, specialist handling is the safer choice.

How do you pack a chandelier for moving?

A small or medium chandelier is packed as a single piece in a custom-built wooden crate, back-filled with polystyrene balls or chippings. Larger pieces are disassembled, with each part labelled, numbered, photographed and wrapped before going into a custom crate.

How do I move a chandelier safely?

Switch off the power, have a qualified electrician disconnect the wiring, photograph the connections, and wrap each crystal and arm separately before the chandelier goes into a crate. For a large, heavy, antique or valuable piece, it is safer to leave it to a specialist team.

Who disconnects and reinstalls the chandelier?

Larger chandeliers are unwrapped and rebuilt at your new home, then re-hung and connected by our trained electrician. The fitting is tested afterwards to make sure it is working correctly.

Can a chandelier be stored between homes?

Yes. Abels offers purpose-built storage for chandeliers with 24-hour Red Care monitoring and modern alarm systems. Your chandelier stays in the case it was packed in, marked with your name, reference number and destination.

Can you ship a chandelier abroad?

Yes. Our teams arrange everything from local chandelier transportation to shipping a chandelier around the world, using the same crating and handling process.

Is my chandelier covered during the move?

Abels’ own cover for your move is called MoveProtect. Ask your Relocation Consultant for the details that apply to your piece, since cover varies by move type and declared value.
