News
Moving to Portugal from the UK involves more than transporting furniture across Europe. You need to plan your immigration status, customs documentation, transport access and delivery arrangements at the same time.
Portugal remains a popular destination for UK residents, with established communities, a varied climate and strong connections to the UK. Abels provides international removals from the UK to Portugal. We offer a detailed home survey, professional packing, customs support and coordinated delivery.
Choosing where to live in Portugal
Portugal has a resident population of approximately 10.75 million people. The right destination will depend on your work, family requirements, preferred climate and access to services.
Lisbon: Portugal’s capital and largest urban centre. The Lisbon region has around 3 million residents. It offers international schools, major employers, cultural attractions and the country’s largest airport.
Porto: A historic northern city with a population of roughly 270,000 in the municipality. Porto is known for its business, technology, education and cultural activity, as well as its cooler, wetter climate.
The Algarve: Portugal’s southern region is popular with retirees, families and second-home owners. It has a warmer climate, coastal communities and easy access to Faro Airport. The region has just under 500,000 residents.
The Silver Coast: A broad Atlantic coastal area north of Lisbon. It includes places such as Nazaré, Peniche, Caldas da Rainha and Figueira da Foz. “Silver Coast” is a geographical and tourism term, not an official statistical region. Its population depends on which towns are included.
Your chosen location will also affect your move. Narrow streets, hillside properties, apartment restrictions and limited parking can require smaller delivery vehicles or a local shuttle.
Residency after Brexit: what UK nationals need to know
British citizens can visit Portugal and the wider Schengen area without a visa. This applies for up to 90 days in any rolling 180-day period. It covers tourism, visiting family, business meetings and certain short-term activities. The allowance is cumulative across the Schengen area, not 90 days in Portugal followed by another 90 days elsewhere.
If you intend to live in Portugal for more than 90 days, you normally need a long-stay national visa. A residence permit follows. Relevant routes may include:
-
D7 residence visa Commonly used by people with qualifying passive income, including some retirees.
-
D8 residence visa Designed for eligible remote workers and digital nomads.
-
Work routes Available where you have an appropriate employment arrangement, work authorisation or professional basis.
-
Family, study and other routes Available subject to the relevant Portuguese requirements.
Apply through the appropriate Portuguese consular channel before travelling. Enter Portugal using the residence visa. Then apply for a residence card through AIMA, the Portuguese Agency for Integration, Migration and Asylum.
You may have seen references to a TIE. This term is more closely associated with Spain’s foreign national identity card. In Portugal, the equivalent practical requirement is your AIMA residence permit or residence card. You may also need a Portuguese tax number, or NIF. Update your details with the Portuguese Tax and Customs Authority, known as AT.
Requirements can change. Check the latest GOV.UK guidance on living in Portugal before making arrangements. Also review the Portuguese Ministry of Foreign Affairs visa information and AIMA guidance.
Transfer of Residence relief and Portuguese customs
Since Brexit, Portugal treats household belongings moving from the UK as imports from outside the EU. However, you may qualify for transfer-of-residence relief. Where you meet the conditions, used household goods can generally enter Portugal without customs duty and import VAT.
The main EU conditions include:
-
You have normally lived outside the EU customs territory for at least 12 continuous months.
-
The goods have generally been in your possession and used at your former home for at least six months.
-
The goods are for your personal or household use, not for resale or commercial activity.
-
The goods are imported within 12 months of establishing your normal residence in Portugal.
-
You do not sell, lend, hire out or transfer the goods during the restricted period, normally 12 months after import.
Portugal treats alcohol, tobacco, commercial transport and some business equipment differently. Vehicles may also involve separate registration and tax requirements.
Do not confuse this with the UK’s ToR1 scheme. UK ToR1 covers goods you import into Great Britain or Northern Ireland. For a move from the UK to Portugal, Portuguese and EU rules govern the relevant relief instead.
How customs clearance works
Before collection, your removal company will confirm the documents required for your circumstances. These may include proof of UK residence and evidence of your Portuguese address or residence status. Passport details, NIF information and a baggage certificate may also be required.
Abels prepares the detailed, valuated inventory during the home survey. You do not have to create the customs inventory yourself. The inventory identifies the goods being moved and their values. This supports the customs declaration and the correct treatment of your shipment.
The shipment is then prepared for export from the UK, transported to Portugal and presented for import clearance. Customs may request supporting evidence before releasing the goods. This is why accurate information and early preparation matter.
For current official guidance, see GOV.UK information on importing personal belongings to Portugal and the EU’s transfer-of-residence customs regulation.
Packing and road transport from the UK to Portugal
For a full household move, a home survey allows Abels to assess volume, access, packing requirements and any specialist items. Furniture is protected with professional materials. Delicate or high-value belongings may need additional export wrapping, foam protection, card protection or made-to-measure cases.
You can find more detail about Abels packing services. Export packing matters because goods may be handled several times during a cross-border journey. They must remain protected throughout.
Abels uses a range of vehicles for European removals. Depending on the volume and route, the fleet includes smaller vehicles, rigid removal vehicles, articulated vehicles and road trains. Some road trains can carry up to 103 cubic metres, or approximately 3,600 cubic feet. The right vehicle depends on access and the confirmed volume of your move.
A delivery in central Lisbon, Porto or an older coastal town may require:
-
Delivery coordination with a building manager or condominium.
-
Parking reservations or permissions.
-
A smaller vehicle for the final section.
-
Shuttle transport from the main vehicle.
-
Lift or external hoist arrangements.
Storage and specialist belongings
Your move date may not match the date when your Portuguese property is ready. Abels can arrange short- or long-term storage in the UK or overseas. This lets you separate collection, customs and final delivery.
Specialist belongings require additional planning. Fine art, antiques, clocks, chandeliers and grand pianos may need dismantling, specialist wrapping, custom casing, lifting equipment or controlled installation.
Abels’ fine art and antiques removals service is designed for these requirements. Each item is assessed as part of the relocation plan. This makes the packing method, transport arrangements and delivery sequence clear before work begins.
