New Rules for Air Shipments to US

New Rules For Air Shipments to US

On 7th October 2024, Customs & Border Protection (CBP) announced that cargo which was unclearly labelled would be rejected from shipping. Now, CBP and the US Transportation Safety Administration (TSA) have made another announcement, adding a new layer of complexity to international air shipments.

From 12th November, freight forwarders and carriers must list out each item contained in the shipment individually, rather than using the previous description of “used household goods or personal effects”. If this isn’t completed in an acceptable way, CBP might reject the shipment entirely. This has come into effect following the discovery of incendiaries that caught fire in the European postal network.

What do the rules mean for me?

Since the release of these rule changes, freight forwarders and carriers must be even more meticulous and mindful of drawing up the inventory of the shipment on air waybills, making sure to list each item. If the content descriptions are “vague or unacceptable”, the shipment may be rejected. This is where having a trusted, experienced partner comes in handy if you’re considering a move to the US.
