Moving/Relocating from China to the UK: Current Shipping Challenges

Our partner moving companies in China have informed us of significant shipping challenges that are reminiscent of the disruptions seen during the COVID-19 pandemic.  Since May, spot freight rates for shipments coming from China have doubled, primarily affecting shipments to Europe and the Americas.  Port congestion and delays have been ongoing since the start of the year.

Several factors contribute to these difficulties:

1. Red Sea Issue: Bypassing the Suez Canal is adding approximately two weeks to sailing times between Asian and European ports, limiting capacity and increasing transit times.

2. Strong Export Demand: China’s GDP grew by 5.3% in Q1, with exports up by 4.9% compared to 2023, leading to redirected vessels and capacity shortages on European and North American lanes.

3. New US Customs Duties: Higher US customs duties on Chinese products have led suppliers to rush shipments before the new tariffs take effect.

These challenges are expected to persist throughout the peak season.
