Critical Port Congestion in Singapore Affecting Shipping Times
For customers planning a move to Singapore, it is important to be aware of significant congestion at Singapore’s port, the world’s second-busiest container port. According to Linerlytica (1), containerships are experiencing wait times of up to seven days to berth, with up to 450,000 TEU of vessels in the queue. This congestion is exacerbating the global shortage of ships and containers, resulting in increased carrier rates.
The delays are primarily due to diversions caused by the Red Sea crisis and shipping lines bypassing Malaysia’s Port Klang. Under normal circumstances, ships can berth almost immediately upon arrival in Singapore or wait for half a day at most. However, some carriers are now omitting Singapore port calls, exacerbating congestion at downstream ports, and causing schedule disruptions. The situation is expected to worsen in June, compelling liner operators to secure new containers and commit to chartering ships beyond September.
